Director of Development

Job Summary:

The Director of Development will be responsible for planning and implementing a comprehensive fundraising program and play a key role in ensuring the financial sustainability of the organization and the success of its programs and services.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • The primary responsibility of a Development Director is to develop and implement a comprehensive fundraising plan that includes major gifts, corporate and foundation giving, planned giving, and special events. This involves identifying and cultivating major gift prospects, as well as corporate and foundation donors, and planning and executing special events that engage donors and raise funds for the organization. 

  • The Development Director must work closely with the Founder and Board of Directors to develop fundraising goals and strategies that align with the organization’s mission and values. This involves presenting fundraising plans and performance metrics to the Board of Directors and working with the Founder to ensure that fundraising activities are aligned with the organization’s overall strategic plan.

  • Sets annual monetary goals and budgets according to short- and long-term goals.

  • Maintains a list of potential financial donors including corporations, foundations, and individuals.

  • Produces relevant and informative fundraising literature for distribution to previous donors and the public.

  • Researches potential sources of, and applies for, grants and public funding.

  • Oversees the fundraising process and maintains records of receipts and disbursements of funds.

  • Plans fundraising events that effectively communicate the purposes of the organization.

Education and Experience:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in nonprofit management, business administration, or a related field is typically required for the role of Development Director. This provides a solid foundation in the principles of nonprofit management and fundraising, as well as the financial and legal aspects of nonprofit operations.

  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in nonprofit fundraising is typically required for the role of Development Director. This includes experience in major gifts, corporate and foundation giving, and special events. Experience in planned giving and digital fundraising is also highly valued.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills are essential for the Development Director, as they must craft compelling donor communications and marketing materials that resonate with potential donors. Knowledge of grant writing is also required. This requires excellent writing and editing skills, as well as the ability to communicate complex ideas clearly and persuasively.

  • The Development Director must be able to work collaboratively with colleagues, Board members, and volunteers to achieve fundraising goals. This requires excellent interpersonal skills, as well as the ability to build relationships and work effectively with diverse groups of people.

  • The Development Director must be a strategic thinker, with the ability to identify challenges and opportunities, and develop creative solutions to meet fundraising goals. They must be able to think critically and make data-driven decisions that help the organization achieve its objectives.

  • The Development Director must be flexible and adaptable, able to adjust fundraising strategies in response to changing circumstances or unexpected events. They must be able to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines, while maintaining a positive and solutions-oriented approach.
