Joey Mattar is a Sophomore BFA dance major at Wayne State University, and a member of the student-run company Dance Workshop. Since joining the department in fall 2018, Joey has performed in works by Twyla Tharp, Pilobolus, Karen Prall, Brandon Koepsell, and more. He had the honor of attending the American College Dance Association Conference in 2018 to perform a work by Leah O’Donnell. He has had the pleasure of performing in many festivals in and around Michigan such as Artlab J’s Detroit Dance Race (2016, 2017, 2018), Michigan Regional Alternative Dance Festival (2017), Kristi Faulkner’s Women’s Work showcase (2019), and more. Joey has had the chance to hone his teaching and choreography skills at various studios and companies around Michigan. Joey has had the pleasure of working at many summer dance intensives and festivals including Brighton Dance Festival (2017), Complexions Detroit Summer Intensive (2019), and was also chosen as one of four emerging choreographers for Eisenhower’s NewDanceFest in 2018. Joey has been trained in both the Stott Pilates Mat and Reformer courses, and is working towards his certification in both. He also serves as Executive Assistant for Pure Existence Dance, where he is able to learn a lot about administrative and creative non-profit work behind the scenes.
